shows the block diagram of an IVU. The controller interacts with the GPS receiver, collects co-ordinates at predefined intervals, processes it and sends out to the communication link. Optionally in certain cases a man-machine- interface like a display with key board can be added for message communication between the driver and the base station.

The base station consists of a high-speed system running VTIS application software that will receive the position data from the vehicles and display on a digital map. It too will have the interface to the communication link. Enhanced features include video features, trace mode, history track, vehicle database, network support etc.

The most costly part of a VTIS is the data link. The data link, together with a suitable communication protocol, has to be selected after a thorough study of various parameters such as the bandwidth requirement, number of vehicles to be tracked, expandability, terrain, area of coverage etc. Sophisticated VTIS are linked to data bases that can support information about the vehicles such as the cargo, the temperature of storage of perishable goods, fuel consumption rate etc. Naturally, such systems demand data link with higher bandwidth. UHF links are suitable for short range without shadow region, as they require line of sight. Cell phone based systems demand minimum infrastructure investment, but is limited in coverage. On the contrary, LEO based systems are expensive and offer largest coverage. The recently introduced WAP and GPRS technologies hold great promises

When multiple vehicles are being tracked, a suitable communication protocol need to be established to avoid collision of radio signal. The simple technique is TDMA, where each IVU communicates during predefined time slots. This synchronization is easy in a GPS based IVU as the GPS receiver provides very precise time reference signal. However, TDMA based systems have limited expandability, flexibility and are known for under-utilization of bandwidth.

The alternative is polling technique. Here each vehicle is addressed by the control station and in response the IVU sends the information. This arrangement enables variable polling rate for different vehicles, non-polling of specific vehicles and expansion of polling list as new vehicles are added.

The relatively large investment needed for the communication link, makes VTIS an opportunity area for service providers. Fig. 4 shows the global market for GPS based VTIS in the next three years. In US and Europe many vehicle tracking service providers are already in operation. In a large country like India with a very long network of roads and long coastline, this opportunity area is yet to be exploited.

Of all the applications of GPS, vehicle tracking and navigational systems have brought this technology to the day-to-day life of the common man. Today GPS fitted cars; ambulances, fleets and police vehicles are common sights on the roads of developed countries. Known by many names such as Automatic Vehicle Locating System (AVLS), Vehicle Tracking and Information System (VTIS), Mobile Asset Management System (MAMS), these systems offer an effective tool for improving the operational efficiency and utilization of vehicles.

The switching off of SA has improved the accuracy of GPS to better than 30 meters, which makes it an ideal position sensor for vehicle tracking systems without the overhead of DGPS.

GPS is used in vehicles for both tracking and navigation. Tracking systems enable a base station to keep track of the vehicles without the intervention of the driver where, as navigation system helps the driver to reach the destination. Whether navigation system or tracking system, the architecture is more or less similar. The navigation system will have convenient, usually a graphic, display for the driver which is not needed for a tracking system. Vehicle Tracking Systems combine a number of well-developed technologies. Irrespective of the technology being used, VTS consist of three subsystems: a) In-vehicle unit (IVU), b) Base station and c) Communication link. The IVU includes a suitable position sensor and an intelligent controller together with an appropriate interface to the communication link. Thanks to the US Government announcement of 911E regulation, radio based position technology has witnessed a spurt of developmental activities.

Network Overlay Systems use cell phone infrastructure for locating vehicles. The cell centers with additional hardware and software assess the time of arrival (TOA) and angle of arrival (AOA) of radio signals from vehicles to compute the position of the vehicles. This information is sent to the tracking centre through the cell link or conventional link. Another technique used for locating vehicles computes the time difference for signals from two cell centers to reach the vehicle. This computation is made in the IVU and the position information is sent to the tracking centre through the cell phone link. A more common technique used is direct radio link (DRL). In this system dedicated radio infrastructure is used along with special IVU to compute vehicle location. However all these techniques impose limitation on the operational area. Alternatively, embedded GPS receivers provide absolute position co-ordinates at any point, without any area restrictions.

Global Positioning Systems or GPS are satellite navigational systems made-up of 24 satellites revolving round the earth. Each satellite has a corresponding receiver on the earth. The satellites orbit the earth at a height of about 12,000 miles. It makes two complete orbits everyday. The GPS satellites continuously transmit digital radio signals that contain data on the location of the satellites and the time taken for signal transmission.

GPS tracking is the term given to the process of being able to locate the exact location of a receiver on earth. Now that the production cost of GPS technology is significantly lower than when it first came into existence, many companies have found new ways to make use of this technology. In GPS tracking, the user is able to keep a track of where they have been using a portable GPS device. GPS tracking can be used in a better way when it is combined with other broadcast technologies, such as a wristwatch or radio. GPS watches, for example, can be fitted with a GPS receiver, which relays a signal to a central command center equipped with GPS software systems. The central command center can track the position of the watch and transmit that information to a third party. That third party may be anyone who needs the position of the wearer urgently. In fact, a variety of such GPS phones and wristbands are sold in the market today. This serves two purposes. Firstly, it provides the driver with an integrated GPS system, without the necessity to purchase a car navigation system, or a PDA-based GPS system. It also offers the possibility to relay that information via a radio or cell phone transmitter.

GPS systems have been used primarily as vehicle locators, especially in cases when a vehicle attached with such a gps tracking system is stolen. The police, once informed, can find out from the control center where the vehicle is, and proceed to track it down. Tracking is also being used in other fields such as pet tracking, coordinated tracking and consumer tracking

When people ask about my business, I tell them, “My company offers GPS vehicle tracking systems.” Their response lets me know whether they are an employee or a business owner.

The first words out of the mouth of an employee is: “Sounds like ‘Big Brother’ to me.” Oh no, not ‘Big Brother!’ Visions of mind-controlled drones working like slaves come to mind and they quickly walk away.

‘Big Brother?’ What is wrong with a business monitoring their vehicles? Or making sure their employees are doing what they’re being paid to do? Who owns these vehicles, anyway? Does the owner have a right to know how they’re being used?

Now, don’t get me wrong. I believe employees should be trusted and treated as adults. But, if you’ve ever driven a rental vehicle differently than the car you own, then you understand how an employee may mistreat a company vehicle.

Take the speeding employee, for example. Employees who drive too fast waste your gasoline, wear out your vehicle prematurely and sooner or later, drive up your insurance rates.

A GPS vehicle tracking system can alert you when someone exceeds your pre-set speed limit. It’s your vehicle, your fuel and your insurance premium; a tracking system helps you regain control of them.

Who uses your vehicles after hours and on weekends? Is an employee using your vehicle to moonlight? Is he using your gas to move his brother-in-law into a new apartment? You’ll know if you install a GPS vehicle tracking device in your vehicles.

GPS Tracking System Vehicle Tracking Data

What information is provided by GPS vehicle tracking systems? Here is a summary and examples of how you could use data provided by GPS tracking devices:

Location data: Latitude and longitude provided in degrees, minutes and seconds. It is accurate to 33 feet, which is as accurate as any commercial GPS device. A vehicle’s location is updated at intervals of between 2 - 15 minutes. The standard update interval varies between manufacturers or can be set by the owner (optional).

Who is closest to the customer that just called? See where all your employees are by checking the map. Never again call an employee just to find out where they are!

Speed calculation: Rate of movement in miles per hour. Movement in excess of a preset speed (standard) or owner-set speed (optional) triggers an alert, sent to the owner.

Are employees routinely speeding? Speeding causes excessive wear and wastes gasoline. Your vehicles represent your company to the public; what kind of an image is presented by a speeding or recklessly-driven company vehicle?

Present direction: Compass direction the vehicle is traveling, expressed as north, south, east or west.
Is employee ‘X’ en route to the customer or leaving their location?

Geofence use: A 'virtual' geographic boundary, created by the owner. Crossing this boundary triggers an alert which is sent to the owner. The alerts are usually e-mail messages or automated telephone calls from the system to the user, including the vehicle identification, date/time of crossing, location of crossing and more, depending upon the system. A Geofence can be 1/4 mile to 20+ miles in diameter.

Is a delivery truck approaching the warehouse? Is the gate open?

Alerts: An automatic e-mail, sent to the owner, with the date, time, location, identification and other details related to some event which has occurred and deserves your attention. Alerts are triggered when a vehicle exceeds a preset speed or crosses a Geofence boundary, for example.

Email alerts can be sent to your Blackberry or portable device. You can monitor your company while out of the office or away from your desk.

Fastest speed report: A daily report of each vehicle's fastest speed.

Why was employee ‘Y’ driving 80 m.p.h.?

Historical data: A record of all data related to each vehicle, maintained for 90 days.
Which vehicles averaged the most miles driven each day? Export vehicle data to an Excel Worksheet to compare productivity between employees.

Ignition on/off: Time, date and location of each instance where a vehicle's ignition was turned on or off.
When was Hooter’s restaurant put on employee ‘Z’s route?

Idle report: Time, date, location and duration of each instance where a vehicle remained motionless while the engine was running. Owner can adjust the duration of idle allowed before a report is generated.

Idling the engine wastes fuel and causes unnecessary wear. Employee ‘Z’s vehicle idled twice as long as employee ‘Y’s vehicle; perhaps employee ‘Z’ should shut off his vehicle’s engine when making deliveries.
Accumulated mileage alert: An alert sent at 3,000 miles, 5,000 miles or at an owner-set interval (optional) as a reminder to perform preventative maintenance.

Email: time to have the oil changed on vehicle ‘A’.

Location on demand: The ability to locate and display location info when requested, regardless of when the last scheduled update occurred.

Where is employee ‘Y’? I need to find him right now!

Map detail: Vehicle location is displayed on a street map, which the owner can enlarge or reduce to see more or less map detail.

Employee ‘A’ says Main Street is closed for construction, what is the next street West?

Landmarks: Reference points which may or may not be visible on the map created to designate locations important to the system user. Landmarks could be customer locations, the user’s shop, warehouse, satellite offices, etc.

Who has been to the warehouse today?

Breadcrumbs: When requested by the owner, a trail of points can be displayed on the map, indicating a vehicle's route during a certain time period.

Do routes overlap between vehicle ‘A’ and vehicle ‘B’?Many GPS tracking system providers offer additional information, but, as I hope you can see, even this list of basic data will give you all the info you need to manage your vehicles. By Ken Sink
